Glowworms and Moths

Wednesday July 10th & Thursday July 11th

This field visit is an exception to our usual plans. Not only will we be meeting at a later time, this is to be a two meeting event, with an indoor meeting the following day.
On Wednesday July 10th our field visit will be meeting at 9:30 pm; due to the nature of the glowworms and moths. We will be setting up moth traps also, friendly traps. A torch and suitable footwear is advised.
On the Thursday morning at 10:00 am we have an invite from our field visit leader to an identification session on the moths in the trap.

Full updated information to the detail for this Wednesdays field visit and follow up identification meeting on Thursday 11th are as follows

Starts at the later time of 9.30 pm with a walk along the Transpennine Trail (TPT)near Thurgoland.
We will set up a moth trap, look at plants along the TPT, … detect bat species, and finally … count the glowworms on the way back. A steady short walk as it becomes dark. The leaders are Doug Brown and Jill Hayler.

The meeting point is Cote Lane near the TPT south of Thurgoland (Grid reference SE 291 003). Please be careful where you park to avoid any problems for local traffic.

The following day (Thursday 11 July) we are invited at 10 am to examine and identify the (cooled) moths before they are released. We are meeting this time off Moorend Lane in Silkstone Common near South Yorkshire Buildings. Grid reference SE 294 041. We will look out for you. It’s very close to Nabs Wood. And Doug and Jill are offering refreshments too!

This was a couple of very interesting and intense meetings for both the 10th and 11th. The glowworm count was over 40; while the moths traps had an array of different species.
